The lunch tray served as our body, and the tongue depresser served as a support. We used the lunch tray as the body of the car because it was both light weight and aerodynamic when flipped upside down. The tongue depresser ran opposite the lunch tray to serve as a support beam. We chose to use the tongue depresser because it was sturdy when placed in the right position, and added very little weight to the car. We glued 2 cup lids together (tops together) to create our wheels. To create less friction, we put rubber bands on the rim of the wheels. Our axles were made out of two skewers with a straw on them. The straw allowed the wheel to turn with out becoming stuck on the axle. To keep the wheel frm sliding, we used a ridged pice of thick straw, and glued it to the smaller plastic drinking straw. The whole car was help together using two rolls of duct tape. We put one balloon inside another to create more force when the air came out of the balloon. In the mouth of the balloon we placed a piece of tubing for the air to blow out, and attached this to the top of our car (*). We then blew up the balloons, and let it go!
*Optional-
If you have a paper cut out (for our car we used a paper gingerbread man) you can tape it on the front for good luck!
